Autism Society announces new awareness promotion for World Autism Awareness Day

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, March 28, 2011 – April 2nd is World Autism Awareness Day and to mark the day the Autism Society of Prince Edward Island is partnering with a major local business on a new promotion.

As part of the awareness efforts around World Autism Awareness Day the Autism Society of PEI is partnering on a new promotion with D.P. Murphy Inc. From March 31st to April 2nd staff at all of D.P. Murphy’s 25 Tim Horton’s and Wendy’s locations on Prince Edward Island will be asking customers to consider purchasing a puzzle piece for $1 to help raise awareness about World Autism Awareness Day. All proceeds from the event will support ongoing programming and services by the Autism Society of PEI for Islanders living with Autism.

"World Autism Awareness Day is a day created by the United Nations to raise awareness about Autism around the world. Autism is a global challenge that touches families and communities around the globe.  Today hundreds of Island families are living with Autism with more cases still undiagnosed and untreated. We’re pleased to have such a community minded local business as D.P. Murphy partnering with us and we’re very thankful to Danny Murphy and the staff for their support," says Jeff Himelman, President of the Autism Society of Prince Edward Island.

“Giving back to the communities that support us is an important part of our business and partnering with the Autism Society of PEI to promote World Autism Awareness Day is a great way to do just that,” said D.P. Murphy Inc. President Danny Murphy.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disorder affected by genetic and environmental factors, characterized by problems in communication, social development and behaviour. Over 200,000 Canadians and more than 35 million people worldwide are directly affected by Autism.

Research shows that approximately 1 out of every 110 new children born will develop some form of Autism and that new cases are diagnosed at a rate of one every twenty minutes. Research also shows that effective early diagnosis, early intervention and appropriate treatment and support services can have a significant positive impact on the quality of life of individuals with Autism and their ability to contribute to society.

Autism Society of PEI Praises Charitable Support Received from Brad Richards

Charlottetown, May 12, 2010 --- The Autism Society of PEI wishes to acknowledge the tremendous support it has received from the charitable efforts of Brad Richards.

“Brad Richards is one of the best friends that Islanders living with Autism have,” said Jeff Himelman, President of the Autism Society of PEI. “Over the last number of years the support provided from the Brad Richards Celebrity Golf Tournament has helped raise awareness about the reality of Autism and the challenges that individuals and families on Prince Edward Island face. It’s also made possible initiatives that are helping make a positive difference for Islanders living with Autism on an ongoing basis.”

Among the initiatives that have been made possible are family support activities in the areas of physical activity and social development; workshops and training for families and professionals featuring local guest speakers and experts from around the globe; information and resources for newly diagnosed families; as well as advocacy support and public education.

“Brad’s support of the Autism Society of PEI has been rooted in a personal awareness and understanding of Autism and how it affects families here on Prince Edward Island. That’s why he chose to share in his success and give back to his community to help those in need. We are deeply grateful for the continuing friendship and support and we look forward to partnering with Brad and his family in the future on ways to help support the hundreds of Island families living with Autism,” said Himelman.

The Autism Society of Prince Edward Island was interview by Global Ottawa today. They polled the whole country today before the federal government’s announcement. You can be assured we informed them of the truth of the situation here in PEI and in Canada. A new federal research chair will look at effective treatments and interventions for autism, the federal government announced on Tuesday.Health Minister Tony Clement announced four other projects to bolster information and monitoring, and to share best practices on autism or autism spectrum disorder – a neuropsychiatric disorder that affects aptitude for communication and personal interaction.
"Thousands of Canadians and their families are suffering, and as a result our society needs to act now to help fill the knowledge gaps," Clement said.
• The other measures include:
• An autism surveillance program to shape research.
• A stakeholder symposium in 2007.
• A new web page on autism on Health Canada's website.
• For people with autism and their families, life is often filled with seemingly insurmountable challenges, Clement said.

"There's anxiety, frustration, yes, even depression, and they all too often can overcome the joys of family life," Clement told a news conference on Parliament Hill. "These challenges are magnified by the reality that issues surrounding ASD are complex and often compounded by other clinical factors." Several questions remain about autism, such as what causes it, why the number of children with it is growing and why there are regional differences across Canada. On top of this, a consensus is lacking on what constitutes adequate and appropriate treatment, he said.

aiming for to bring Dennis here and be able to offer you these Autism Safety
Training seminars at no charge. The stories and photos of our adventure, as
well as many press articles are all on our blog. The blog and information on
our Run and Dennis' seminars can all be found at
http://www.PlanetAutism.com/runman . These important safety training
seminars were made possible by the generous donations of Islanders and folks
from as far away as Texas & London England and the keen interest of law
enforcement & first responders who want to be educated about our kids.
Together we can make PEI an even safer place for autistics to live, grow and
thrive.

Please spread the word and encourage anyone involved with Autism and other
developmental disabilities to attend. Everyone will come away with a good,
practical understanding of the best approaches when they interact with
children and adults who are affected by Autism Spectrum & developmental
disorders.

Lots going on with the Autism Society this week. Media has picked up on our Human Rights cases finally coming up, after 4 1/2 year wait.
They are listed here:
http://www.gov.pe.ca/humanrights/index.php3?number=72424〈=E

The CBC news clip is:
The parents of four disabled children are asking the province's human rights
commission to determine if Prince Edward Island's disability support program
is discriminatory. The parents argue their incomes should not be used to determine how much
funding their children receive for programs like autism treatment. Currently, the more money a family earns, the less a child gets from the government.

"What the parents are suggesting is that it is not fair, it's essentially
discriminatory to test their income and apply it to their children," said
Jacqueline O'Keefe of the Prince Edward Island Human Rights Commission. "They don't feel their children should miss out on certain treatments
because of the income of their parents." The province will argue that capping funding based on family income has been upheld in other jurisdictions, O'Keefe said. "They will argue based on case
law that is out there now that they are within their right to limit funding."

The commission has scheduled a panel hearing starting in November. My Lawyer and I will be speaking to the media on Tuesday. Please remember the Autism Society swims are starting again Saturday night at the CARI Pool – 7-8 pm, free to children with autism and their family.
These swims are provided by Danny Murphy thru Tim Hortons.
